Tool Update – Change the Way We Track Google Maps Results in USA

Since the release of Google Pigeon in the US, there has been a high degree of volatility in Google local / maps results.

Part of this is that Old’ Google Maps has not benefited from the changes bought about Pigeon and so the results ordering is different to what is displayed in ‘New’ Google Maps.

The significance of these changes by Google required us to make a very considered change to the way we track Maps results in the USA.

Tracking Maps through new local interface

In November, Google released a new style of local results dubbed ‘Hamburger’ pack results (see screenshot below).

At the same time they also introduced a new interface for local results which does match up New Google Maps.

New ‘hamburger’ style results:

New local results Interface:

We’ve now updated the way in which we track Google Local/Map results in the USA to make use of this new interface. This means that we’re able to deliver much more accurate ranking results for all USA reports.

Tracking Google Maps outside of USA

We currently use ‘Old’ Google Maps to report on local rankings outside of the USA. This will be changing in the coming week as we have started to witness Google Pigeon being rolled out beyond the US to other countries.

Thanks to everyone for your patience whilst we worked a way around this complex issue!

Have a great Christmas & a Happy New Year!
